Santa Ynez Special Education Consortium takes innovative approach to teacher training in Autism
In a bid to address the escalating needs of students in special education classes, the Santa Ynez Special
Education Consortium (SYSEC) has embraced the use of technology to assist their teachers to learn more about
Autism and how to work with students affected by the disability. SYSEC has worked with
Innovative-Learning.com, a Santa Ynez based company that works internationally to develop internet based courses for the human services and education sector.
The two organizations have joined to make available online courses that are competency tested and research
based. The aim is to support all teachers so they are up to date and have access to the latest techniques and
information on autism. The courses use innovative approaches to presenting and testing the information so as to maximize the outcomes for students and teachers.
"The goal was to find the most effective means of getting information to the teachers without further stretching
either their valuable time or scarce resources" says Dr Wally Olsen, Director for Santa Ynez Special Education
Consortium. "The use of technology allows us to make information available in an educationally and cost effective
manner without having to send teachers away for training or further burdening an already struggling resource" says Dr Olsen.
"We work with education and human service organizations all over the world and we have been impressed with
Tom Cooper and his team's understanding of both the issue and the need to explore more effective means of
assisting teachers with understanding what are complex disorders", says Dr Michael Reid, President of Innovative-Learning.com. "We commend them" he says.
The Santa Ynez Special Education Consortium will evaluate the outcomes of the project and assess its effectiveness in partnership with Innovative-Learning.com.
